Interpretive Fellowships at Art Museums

  • Four $30,000 Interpretive Art Museum Fellowships for one-year internships for training in interpretation (either as a museum educator or curator) in European art at an American art museum.
  • Allocation of funds: typically, $25,000 as a Fellowship stipend, and $5,000 toward host institution administrative costs, benefits for the Fellow, and other direct costs of hosting the Fellowship.
  • Restrictions: Intended primarily as an opportunity for individuals who have completed a B.A. degree in art history, studio art or museum studies and who are pursuing graduate study in these fields or a related field, or who have completed an M.A. degree in one of these fields.
  • Application procedures: Application must be made by the museum at which the Fellowship will be based.  Fellowship candidate may be identified in advance of application by the host institution or recruited subsequent to receiving the award.
  • Deadline: April 1

The interpretation of art museum collections demands a combination of art history training, understanding of learning theory, and sensitivity to the learning needs and styles of widely diverse audiences. Within a supervised environment, the young interpretive educator develops the hands-on experience and the confidence on which to base a future career, whether as museum curator or museum educator.  Preference given to applications that will provide the Fellow with an opportunity to work closely with both educators and curators.
