Fellowships

Competitive Kress Fellowships administered by the Kress Foundation are awarded to art historians and art conservators in the final stages of their preparation for professional careers, as well as to art museum curators and educators. To learn more about a particular fellowship and how to apply, select a program below.

History of Art: Institutional Fellowships
Four $22,500-per-year Kress Institutional Fellowships in the History of European Art for a two-year research appointment in association with select foreign host institutions (see list).
History of Art: Travel FellowshipsFifteen to twenty Kress Travel Fellowships in the History of Art for travel required for the completion of dissertation research on European art. Stipends generally range from $3500 to $10,000. Dissertation research must focus on European art before 1900.
Conservation FellowshipsTen $30,000 Kress Conservation Fellowships for one-year internships in advanced conservation in European art at a museum or conservation research facility.
Interpretive Fellowships at Art Museums
Four $30,000 Kress Interpretive Fellowships for one-year internships for training in interpretation either as an art museum educator or curator, in European art at an American art museum.
Responsive FellowshipsA limited number of “Responsive Fellowships” are awarded to institutions sponsoring fellowship opportunities that advance the mission of the Foundation, but fall outside our main Fellowship areas.

Fellowship FAQ

Q: Do I have to be nominated to apply for a fellowship?

A: There are different requirements for each fellowship.  History of Art Travel and Institutional Fellowships: candidates must be nominated by their academic department. Conservation Fellowships: applications must be submitted by the museum or conservation research facility that will host the fellowship. Interpretive Art Museum Fellowships: applications must be submitted by the museum that will host the fellowship.
