Kress History of Art Institutional Fellowships are awarded to pre-doctoral candidates in the history of art; Conservation Fellowships are awarded to art conservators in the final stages of their preparation for professional careers; and Interpretive Fellowships at Art Museums are given to students of art history and related fields interested in pursuing a career in art museum education and curating. Please carefully review the specific requirements for each Fellowship application.

History of art institutional fellowships

The History of Art Institutional Fellowships are administered by six European research centers.

As of November 1, 2018 individuals will be required to apply for a Kress Institutional Fellowship using the Foundation’s online grantmaking portal. PhD candidates who have been nominated by their departments should register for portal access at https://kressfoundation.fluxx.io.

The portal will accept Institutional Fellowship applications between November 1 and November 30, 2018.

DEADLINE: Applications must be submitted through the grantmaking portal on or before November 30 at 5:00pm EST.

Conservation fellowships

The Foundation of the American Institute of Conservation (FAIC) administers the Kress Conservation Fellowships on behalf of the Kress Foundation. All applications should be submitted directly to the FAIC.

Please consult the Application Guidelines, and use the application form supplied. These materials are also available on the FAIC website.

DEADLINE: Applications must be RECEIVED by January 22.
If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications must be received by the previous Friday.

Interpretive fellowships at art museums

As of March 1, 2019, art museums will be required to apply for a Kress Interpretive Fellowship using the Foundation’s online grantmaking portal

Applicants must register for portal access at https://kressfoundation.fluxx.io.

In the portal applicants will be asked to describe, in the text fields provided:

  • the proposed Fellowship program, including envisioned interpretive activities and mentoring relationships

All applicants will be required to upload the following:

  • IRS determination letter of 501(c)3 status for the organization that will receive and administer the funds
  • Curriculum vitae of the Fellowship mentor or supervisor

If a Fellow has not been identified, applicants will be asked to describe:

  • the ideal candidate, including education level
  • how the Fellowship position will be publicized
  • how and by whom the candidates will be evaluated and a selection made

If a Fellow has been identified, applicants will be asked to upload the following:

  • Curriculum vitae of the proposed Fellow
  • One (1) letter of recommendation for the proposed Fellow

The portal will accept Interpretive Fellowship applications between March 1 and April 1, 2019.

DEADLINE: Applications must be submitted through the grantmaking portal on or before April 1 at 5:00pm EST.

Fellowships FAQ

Q: Do I have to be nominated to apply for a fellowship?

A: There are different requirements for each fellowship.
  
History of Art Institutional Fellowships: candidates must be nominated by their academic department.
  
Conservation Fellowships: applications must be submitted by the museum or conservation research facility that will host the fellowship.
  
Interpretive Fellowships at Art Museums: applications must be submitted by the museum that will host the fellowship.

 

Q: Can I apply for a fellowship online?

A: Yes. The Foundation's online portal will accept Institutional Fellowship applications from November 1 to November 30, 2018. Interpretive Fellowship applications can be submitted to the online portal from March 1 to April 1, 2019.

Conservation Fellowship applications will not be accepted through the portal and will continue to be administered by the FAIC.
