THE KRESS FOUNDATION EUROPEAN PRESERVATION PROGRAM

Conservation of European monuments was of particular interest to Samuel H. Kress and has been sponsored by the Kress Foundation since its inception in 1929. For the past three decades, the World Monuments Fund has administered the Foundation's funding in this area, including a program of challenge grants – The Kress Foundation European Preservation Program – established in 1987. The program is now an integral part of the Art of Europe in Context, reflecting the Foundation's concern for the original sites for which works of art were created.

WORLD MONUMENTS FUND

The World Monuments Fund serves as the private sector international leader in the preservation of endangered works of cultural heritage throughout the world. It administers The Kress Foundation European Preservation Program, which grants $400,000 annually in a competitive program for the conservation of European sites of artistic importance. MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES HOUSING THE KRESS COLLECTION

More than 3,000 works of European art in the Kress Collection were distributed to over 90 locations in 33 states, plus Puerto Rico and France. Today, Kress paintings and sculpture are prized elements of the permanent collections of institutions from Washington DC to Honolulu, from Seattle to Coral Gables.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

A significant portion of the Kress Collection of European art (376 paintings, 94 sculptures, 1,307 bronzes, and 38 drawings) are today part of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. In addition, the Kress Foundation sponsors the Kress-Murphy Symposium on Illustrated European Books and Manuscripts, a Kress Professorship and Kress Fellowships in Art History at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and projects relating to resources and research in art history.
