Provenance
Said to have been brought to the Church of Santa Domenico, in Zadar, Yugoslavia by Pietro Cottopagna in 1214, but the name and the painting are never mentioned in the archives of the church; [1] Soppe Family, Bribinj, Croatia; by inheritance to Mariano Rovaro Brizzi. [2] (Salocchi) [3]. (Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, [1878-1955], Rome-Florence); sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 1 July 1950 as Pre-Berlinghiero; gift to the El Paso Museum of Art in 1961, no. 1961.1.1. [2] The Castellani family acquired the painting when the church was closed, according to V. Brunelli, Storia della citta di Zara, 1913, p. 257. Brunelli mentions a "Madonna d'immagine greca" which was once in Santa Domenica, Zara, and cites tenuous traditions regarding its source. The twentieth-century owner Brizzi seems to be the only authority for connecting KI715 with the reference in Brunelli and for the subsequent provenance of the picture. According to European treasures : international Gothic through realism, El Paso Museum of Art , 2010, p. 21, the name Castellani is mistaken.
