Crucifixion
K29
Allentown, Pa., Allentown Art Museum, Study Collection (60.02.KBS), since 1960. Wood. 10 1/4 X 11 3/4 in. (26 X 29.9 cm.). Abrasions and small losses of paint throughout. The crowded, rectangular composition, the allover design of the background, and the attenuated figures are characteristic of the Riminese style in the following of the fourteenth-century master Baronzio.(1) There are suggestions also, in the intense facial expressions, of the Bolognese Jacopino di Francesco. The provincial character of the work –awkward poses and exaggerated features– date K29 as a retardataire production, near the end of the century. It is likely a fragment of a large panel which was a wing of a triptych or diptych with scenes from the Passion of Christ.(2) Provenance: Contini Bonacossi, Rome. Kress acquisition, 1927 -exhibited: 'Italian Paintings Lent by Mr. Samuel H. Kress,' Oct. 1932, Atlanta, Ga., through Sept. 1933, Salt Lake City, Utah, p. 28 of catalogue, as Baronzio; 'Golden Gate International Exposition,' San Francisco, Calif, 1940, no. 102 of catalogue, as Baronzio.
