Provenance

Col Sir Charles Wyndham Murray [1844-1928]; (his estate sale, Christie's, London, 15 March 1929, no. 96, as by Cima); Arthur L. Nicholson. [1] George H. Winterbottom, London; (his sale, Christie's, London, 20 December 1935, no. 101); [2] W.H.G. Turner. (Giuseppe Bellesi, London) in 1936. (Koetser, London). [3] (Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, [1878-1955], Rome-Florence); sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 16 June 1937; on loan to Honolulu Academy of Arts in 1938; returned to the Kress Foundation in 1952; gift 1961 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston no. 61.61. [1] According to the Getty Provenance Index database, in anonymous sale on 15 May 1929, no 96, and bought by A.L. Nicholson, but this is incorrect. According to MFAH Houston, the the picture was in the Wyndham Murray sale on that date, as by Cima. [2] Fern Rusk Shapley, Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, Italian Schools XV-XVI Centuries, New York,1968, p. 155, mistakenly gives as cat. no. 13. It was sold with a certificate from v. Hadeln. [3] According to the Zeri Photo Archives the painting was in London with Bellesi before Contini. Also per annotated photo mount in the Witt Library, London, which also gives Koetser.
