Provenance

Probably Sir Peter Lely [1618-1680], London; (Lely estate sale, held at his home in Covent Garden, 18 April 1682, no. 3). Possibly the Earl of Jersey. [1] (Giuseppe Bellesi, London); [2] (Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi [1878-1955], Rome - Florence); sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 12 June 1935; gift to the National Gallery of Art in 1939; deaccessioned in 1952 and returned to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; gift 1973 to David and Afred Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, no. 1973.38. [1] According to Frederico Zeri, in an opinion dated 24 January 1963, this painting was with the Earl of Jersey in c. 1935. If so, this would be George Francis Child Villiers, 9th Earl [1910-1998]. Zeri suggests it was in a Jersey sale at Sotheby's or Christies but to date this sale has not been identified. [2] Bellesi per annotation on photograph in the Witt Library, London (mistakenly as with Bellesi still in 1936).
