[1868–1939]; (Alessandro Contini Bonacossi [1878-1955] Rome-Florence); sold to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation on 11 July 1948; gift 1961 to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, no. F61-63. [1] The Hercolani Archive is still privately owned by the family in Bologna, Italy. The painting then attributed to Francesco Francia is mentioned as part of the Hercolani Collection in an inventory (inv. number 1966) published by B. Ghelfi "Un nuovo inventario della Galleria Hercolani", in “L'Archiginnasio. Bollettino della Biblioteca Comunale di Bologna”, n. CII, 2007, pp. 405-469. According to this inventory, the painting was sold by the Hercolani family on 7 May 1836. It is possible that the painting was sold directly to Sir Charles Robinson, former curator for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, who was acting as art advisor for Sir Francis Cook.
