The Church of Santa Maria della Salute
K1808
Coral Gables, Fla., University of Miami (61.37), since 1961.(1) Canvas. 12 5/8 x 15 5/8 in. (32.1 x 39.7 cm.). Fair condition; abraded in sky. Although abrasion of the pigment makes a definite attribution difficult,(2) K1808 still has something of the sparkle of Guardi's mature style, toward 1780. The view comprehends the same complex of buildings as does K1947, but it is taken from farther to the right, and more outlying buildings appear to the right of the Salute while the distance between the church and the dogana is compressed. Provenance: Rt. Hon. George Augustus Frederick Cavendish Bentinck, London (sold, Christie's, London, July 11, 1891, no. 646, as F. Guardi; bought by Martin Colnaghi). Mrs. Arthur James, London (sold, Christie's, London, Oct. 15, 1948, no. 109, as Francesco Guardi). Contini Bonacossi, Florence. Kress acquisition, 1950 –exhibited: 'Twenty-five Paintings from the Collection of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation,' University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., 1951, no. 25 of catalogue by W. E. Suida, as Francesco Guardi; 'The Guardi Family,' Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Tex., Jan. 13-Feb. 16, 1958, as Francesco Guardi.
