Provenance

Dr. Paul Mersh [1859-1932], Paris. [1] (Blakeslee Galleries, New York); (sale, American Art Association, New York, 21 April 1915, no. 5); Solomon Solis Carvalho [1856-1942]; [2] (Pinakos, Inc.); sold to (M. Knoedler & Co., New York) in 1941; [3] bought by Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 21 April 1942 as Melozzo da Forli; gift to the National Gallery of Art in 1943; deaccessioned 1957 and returned to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation; gift to El Paso Museum of Art, no. 1961.1.10. [1] Mersh was a son-in-law of the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer and vice-consul of Luxembourg, residing in Paris. He is said to have brought both K1329 and its companion K1330 to the United States in c. 1885. [2] Carvalho was a journalist and later manager of William Randolph Hearst Publications.
