Provenance

Barbaro Family, Venice c.1745; [1] by inheritance in 1860 to Marcantonio Barbaro until 1874; by inheritance or purchase to Elisa Bassi, Venice; [2] Anonymous Collection, Austria. Professor Max Thedy, Weimar; Charles F. Dieterich, New York; (his sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, 8-9 April 1920, no.108); Dr. Muller. (Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi [1878-1955] Rome-Florence); sold to Samuel H. Kress [1863-1955] on 17 July 1931; gift to the High Museum in 1961, no.32.6 [1] Originally commissioned the painting for Palazzo Barbaro in San Vitale, Italy [2] In 1866 Bassi apparently sold at least three companions to this painting to the dealer Favenza, and then they next appear in a French sale in 1874; the point at which this painting was separated from its companions is not known, but presumably between those two dates.
