Provenance
Probably the Earls of Lonsdale, Lowther Castle, Cumberland; probably (Lowther Castle sale, Maple & Co. and Thomas Wyatt, held on the premises, 29 April - 1 May 1947, day one, no. 1689 as Venetian 16th Century, Portrait of a Gentleman in a Black Coat and Black Hat); [1] (J. Leger & Son, London). [2] Hoswald Helson, Brighton, East Sussex. (Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi [1878-1955] Rome- Florence); sold to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation on 17 July 1950 as Jacopo Tintoretto; gift 1961 to the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, Coral Gables, no. 61.036.000. [1] Typed on mount of a photo in the Witt Library is "Lowther Castle," the home of the Earls of Lonsdale. The sales held on the premises between April - June 1947 were during the time the title was held by Lancelot Edward Lowther, 6th Earl Lonsdale [1867-1953], who inherited the title, and large debts, from his brother the 5th Earl.
