Anne Helmreich Elected to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation’s Board of Trustees
The Samuel H. Kress Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anne Helmreich to its Board of Trustees effective immediately. Helmreich is a scholar of nineteenth-century European art, who is widely recognized for her pathbreaking digital scholarship and her commitment to promoting access to and engagement with art. Helmreich brings to the Foundation extensive experience as an art historian, a non-profit arts administrator, and an educator, across the disciplines and audiences the Foundation serves.
“We are honored to welcome Anne to the Board. She is a formidable leader, and a rigorous thinker devoted to art history and its allied fields,” said Daniel H. Weiss, Chair of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation Board of Trustees. “Her profound belief in the importance of making accessible the history of art, and its enjoyment by all, will be an invaluable addition to the Board. We look forward to working with her to advance the Foundation's mission.”
Helmreich currently serves as the director of the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art (AAA), the world's preeminent and most widely used research center dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making accessible primary sources documenting the history of the visual arts in America. Under her leadership, AAA has strengthened its mission as a trusted source, empowering an expansive history of American art and culture through collecting, preserving, and making available to all the primary sources documenting the visual arts of the United States.
Prior to joining the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, Helmreich served as Associate Director at the Getty Foundation, where she led strategic initiatives that supported individuals and institutions committed to advancing a greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts throughout the world. Also at the Getty, Helmreich served as the inaugural co-chair of the DEAI Council and as the associate director of digital initiatives at the Getty Research Institute. Her work in higher education has included administrative and teaching appointments as Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Professor of Art History at Texas Christian University and as Director of the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and Associate Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University. Helmreich's scholarship is widely published and spans the digital humanities, the art market, and the intersections of art and science.
Helmreich has served on numerous boards and advisory committees; current service includes, the National Committee of the History of Art, the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD), and the Methusalem Project, Leuven University. She holds a BA from Dickinson College, an MA in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh, and a PhD in Art History from Northwestern University.
