Duccio di Buoninsegna

c. 1250/1255-1318/1319

Sienese School. Active from 1278; died 1318/19. Duccio, the greatest master of the Sienese School, tempered the traditional severity of the Byzantine manner with the linear lyricism and decorative grace of the Northern Gothic style. He was influenced also by contemporary Florentine art, especially by Cimabue's early work.
