Master of the Saint Marien Altarpiece

This artist was identified by K. von Garzarolli-Thurnlackh as the painter of an altarpiece dated 1524 in the church of St. Marien (near Knittelfeld in the province of Styria, Austria). He was probably trained in Southern Germany and first acquainted with the Danubian style on an Austrian journey. It should be noted that the St. Marien Altar is poorly preserved; only in the physiognomies of the smaller figures can close correspondence with the Kress panels be detected.
